Medical Resource Management (MRM)

In the healthcare environment, it is not so much errors within specific areas of expertise which cause accidents or incidents; it is more often breakdowns in communication, poor teamwork, or inefficient hand-offs that create a series of events which may in turn lead to extended hospital stays or, even worse, fatalities.

Very often healthcare MRM is likened to CRM training in aviation, and of course there is a direct read-across from this type of training into MRM in the healthcare profession.

To put healthcare into context with aviation therefore, consider that in the United States alone, the reported number of deaths due to medical errors is 98,000 per year. In aviation terms, this would equate to fatal crashes of two fully laden Boeing 737 aircraft every day of the year.

Why MRM?

As breakdowns in human performance can lead to critical consequences in healthcare, MRM training can therefore assist healthcare organisations to develop safer clinical working practices, to improve patient safety, and to reduce the incidence of adverse incidents, errors and near misses.

How can this be achieved?

For 15 years ITS has specialised in all aspects of CRM/MRM training, and with our healthcare MRM training programmes our aim is to effect a change in attitudes and behaviours, which in turn leads to improved working practices and error management.

We can achieve this by concentrating on a number of key elements such as, for example:
  • Threat & error management
  • Teamwork
  • Personality, attitude & behaviour
  • Communication
  • Decision making
  • Situation awareness
  • Briefing and debriefing skills
  • Case studies

Why ITS?

ITS is a research driven organisation, by which we mean that our training courses are customised to the needs of each individual organisation, based on a detailed evaluation of the client's requirements.

We therefore work with individual healthcare clients to understand their specific needs, and to develop appropriate solutions.
